USCIS Form I-797 Receipt Will Replace Sticker to Extend Validity of Green Cards

January 13, 2021

The USCIS announced that starting this month, in lieu of an extension sticker, they will be issuing Form I-797 receipt notices for Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, when someone’s green card expires or is soon to expire. The receipt notice should be mailed in 7 to 10 days after the USCIS accepts the Form I-90, and will serve as evidence of identity and employment authorization in conjunction with the expired green card. The receipt notice will extend the validity of the green card for 12 months.

This means that I-90 applicants will no longer have to visit an Application Support Center to obtain temporary evidence of their lawful permanent resident status (formerly a sticker to place on the green card).

For questions about employment verification, see the USCIS’ I-9 Central site.
