Possible Furlough of Over 13,000 USCIS Employees to Begin August 3, 2020; Likely to Result in Significant Delays in Processing

July 8, 2020

Following a June 25 statement from the USCIS’ Deputy Director for Policy warning that the agency may need to furlough over 13,000 staff members due to budget shortfalls and barring emergency funding from Congress, it is being widely reported that USCIS has issued furlough notices which will take effect on August 3 if the agency receives no emergency funding.

Terms of the funding are being debated, and if the USCIS does in fact furlough 70 percent of its workforce as reported, this will certainly impact the processing times of all employment-based petitions and applications.

Weaver Schlenger will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates on our website.
