WSM Partners Kirsten Schlenger and Mary Jane Weaver and Associate Stephanie Smith attended the annual American Immigration Lawyers Association conference in San Diego from June 16 to 19, where they attended lectures on a variety of immigration topics and attended the American Immigration Council’s annual event to honor extraordinary immigrants Somy Ali, Louis Caldera and Yusif Gharfari.  Kirsten Schlenger continues this year in her role as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the American Immigration Council (AIC).  The AIC exists to promote the prosperity and cultural richness of our diverse nation by educating citizens about the enduring contributions of America’s immigrants; standing up for sensible and humane immigration policies that reflect American values; and insisting that our immigration laws be enacted and implemented in a way that honors fundamental constitutional and human rights.

Our Associate Attorneys remain heavily involved in the American Immigration Lawyers Association Northern California chapter.  Senior Associate Lisa Baker has assumed the position of Secretary for AILA NorCal, Stephanie Smith will continue in her role as Advocacy Co-Coordinator, and Associate Katy Chase will continue in her role as Media Coordinator for the area.

On June 7, 2011, WSM attorneys Laura Mazel, Stephanie Smith and Flora Hoffman attended a meeting with Congressman Mike Honda, Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Committee Chairs of President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans to discuss how current USCIS decision-making on H-1B petitions stymies business growth and entrepreneurship in the United States.  Our firm provided the Congressman and others with critical insights on the problems small businesses face in securing H-1B visas for their professional employees.  We have been asked to develop proposed solutions for improving the current adjudicative framework in order to enable more entrepreneurship and growth for U.S. employers seeking to hire foreign talent.
